100,000 an Acre Title

"The development industry is integral to every province's history. In $100,000 an Acre, Doug Kelly brings a colorful perspective to this history - for both Calgary and Edmonton."

MAYOR STEPHEN MANDEL, Edmonton, April 2009

"Doug, I’ve had a chance to read your book and wanted to thank you for writing it. As a younger member in the industry I found many of the stories interesting and entertaining. It also helped me fill in some of the blanks.”

JODIE WACKO ACP, MCIP, Director Land Development, Beaverbrook Developments.

“I like the way you have ‘personalized’ people with the stories, rather than a litany of stats and facts – in my opinion you have really captured the essence of each character and made them real and interesting.“

RUDY KOOP Strathcona County.

ABOUT THE BOOK

$100,000 an Acre chronicles the unique characters and entrepreneurs who shaped Alberta’s land development and housing industry in the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. It’s about the people who took great risks to create the neighbourhoods in Alberta’s two largest cities that we now live in and enjoy. After hundreds of hours of one-on-one interviews, Doug Kelly has told their often humorous stories and, in the process, brought to life and paper these important bits of Alberta history.

Included in the book are colour coded maps of Edmonton and Calgary, compiled by the author, showing the developers’ names on the communities they developed and when they were developed, starting with the first developer in Calgary, Johnny McLeod and the first developer in the Town of Jasper Place, Stan Melton.
